ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said that he was impressed with Vietnam's preparation in taking over the presidency of the bloc as of January 1, 2010.

"The new chair has a priority set and useful agenda as an implementation guidance and a support for member countries, the ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN's dialogue partners and other external parties," Pitsuwan said in a statement.

Vietnam will focus on working with other ASEAN members to speed up the implementation of agreements, plans and programmes, including the implementation of the ASEAN Charter and the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community, according to the statement.

Vietnam , which joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 1995, will lead the group to Dec. 31 under the theme of “Toward ASEAN Community: From Vision to Mission .”

On this occasion, the Bangkok Post of Thailand on Jan. 2 carried an article, saying that Vietnam will push to get the group turned into a community as planned by 2015.

Vietnam has set the theme of “Toward ASEAN Community: From Vision to Mission,” which includes steps to accelerate implementation of three blueprints and enforcement of the charter by developing a legal framework and fostering ties with countries and groups outside the bloc, it wrote.

According to the article, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung pledged Vietnam would build the ASEAN Community and elevate the profile of the group internationally./.
