ASEAN completes draft COC on East Sea

Senior officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on May 24 concluded drafting the key elements for the Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea , a Cambodian senior official said.

Soeung Rathchavy, Secretary of State at Cambodia ’s ForeignMinistry, who chaired the 7 th ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting, saidthe draft will be submitted to ASEAN foreign ministers for a finaldecision at their July meeting.

The completion ofdrafting the key elements of the COC is a positive result, she said,saying that the COC is very important in boosting regional peace andstability as well as strengthening the friendship and cooperationbetween ASEAN and China .

If the draft isapproved, ASEAN will conduct negotiations with China , she said,adding that ASEAN senior officials stress the bloc’s joint commitment toimplementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea(DOC).

ASEAN and Chinese foreign ministers adoptedthe DOC in Phnom Penh in 2002. In July last year, foreign ministersof ASEAN and China adopted the guidelines for implementing the DOC.-VNA
