ASEAN has celebrated its 43 rd anniversary at its headquarters in Jakarta , Indonesia , with a call to bring markets together and make nations act in alliance.

In his opening speech, ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan highlighted the role played by ordinary people on the road to advancement towards an ASEAN community.

Ordinary people should understand that the grouping has brought many benefits and that ASEAN means themselves, Pitsuwan said.

He also emphasised the need to encourage ordinary people to work for the “ASEAN vision”, which he said would decide the young generation’s future once it materialises.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa spotlighted ASEAN’s great contributions to peace and security in the region during the past 43 years but acknowledged that much is left to do to turn plans of action into real action in order to improve regional living conditions and advance towards an “undivided ASEAN”.

Vu Dang Dung, Head of the Vietnamese permanent mission at ASEAN, echoed the view for unity, saying as a member of the ASEAN family Vietnam would make greater efforts to contribute to building an ASEAN community by 2015.

“ Vietnam will do its utmost to fulfil the mission of ASEAN chair,” Dung pledged.

“ Vietnam has contributed considerably to ASEAN cooperation in all fields, including making decisions on policies and paving ground for the grouping’s improved prospects,” he said.

He cited the success of the 16 th ASEAN summit, ministerial meetings which culminated in the 43 rd meeting of foreign ministers and other relevant events in Hanoi as evidence of Vietnam ’s great contributions to building an ASEAN community./.
