ASEAN has celebrated its 43 rd anniversary at its headquarters inJakarta , Indonesia , with a call to bring markets together and makenations act in alliance.
In his opening speech,ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan highlighted the role played byordinary people on the road to advancement towards an ASEAN community.
Ordinary people should understand that the groupinghas brought many benefits and that ASEAN means themselves, Pitsuwansaid.
He also emphasised the need to encourageordinary people to work for the “ASEAN vision”, which he said woulddecide the young generation’s future once it materialises.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa spotlighted ASEAN’sgreat contributions to peace and security in the region during the past43 years but acknowledged that much is left to do to turn plans ofaction into real action in order to improve regional living conditionsand advance towards an “undivided ASEAN”.
Vu DangDung, Head of the Vietnamese permanent mission at ASEAN, echoed the viewfor unity, saying as a member of the ASEAN family Vietnam wouldmake greater efforts to contribute to building an ASEAN community by2015.
“ Vietnam will do its utmost to fulfil the mission of ASEAN chair,” Dung pledged.
“ Vietnam has contributed considerably to ASEAN cooperation in allfields, including making decisions on policies and paving ground forthe grouping’s improved prospects,” he said.
Hecited the success of the 16 th ASEAN summit, ministerial meetings whichculminated in the 43 rd meeting of foreign ministers and otherrelevant events in Hanoi as evidence of Vietnam ’s greatcontributions to building an ASEAN community./.
