ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh has called on the governments of the group’s member countries to create a favourable environment for public-private partnership (PPP) to play a role in facilitating the ASEAN Connectivity agenda.

He made the statement at the 4th ASEAN Connectivity Symposium, themed “Partnering Private Sector for ASEAN Connectivity,” which took place in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, on August 27.

The ASEAN leader highlighted the need to increase private sector investment for addressing massive financial needs of ASEAN Connectivity projects.

Through the PPP, the governments and the private sector can work together in developing sustainable and high-quality infrastructure, he said.

This year’s symposium focused on the role of PPP in the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC)

More than 140 government officials, researchers and private sector representatives from ASEAN member states and dialogue partner countries, as well as international organisations at the event agreed that PPP is one of the measures that help speed up ASEAN Connectivity.

They said ASEAN needs to be more creative in implementing PPP, especially in trans-border projects, along with issuing its own PPP guidance.

The annual ASEAN Connectivity Symposium is a public-private sector consultation enabling relevant stakeholders to discuss concrete steps and articulate perspectives on the implementation of the MPAC.-VNA
