The 11th Meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) opened in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, from January 29 to February 2.

The meeting, the first of its kind for the 2013-2015 term, was chaired by Dr. Pehin Dato Awang Ahmat bin Jumat, the representative of Brunei and the Chair of AICHR.

The event focused on evaluating the progress of the implementation of AICHR’s priority programmes and activities, including the progress of the thematic studies in ‘Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Human Rights’, and ‘Migration and Human Rights’.

AICHR also had an extensive discussion on the implementation of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD), which was adopted in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, last year.

At the meeting, delegates agreed to give priority to the dissemination of the landmark AHRD, by publishing the AHRD and the Phnom Penh Statement on the adoption of the AHRD in a booklet format. The AHRD will also be translated into national languages of ASEAN members.

The next meeting of AICHR will be convened at the ASEAN Secretariat headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 8-10. -VNA
