Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem attended the launch of an ASEAN-2010 logo contest on Aug. 18 to prepare for the country’s term as the bloc’s president next year.

The ASEAN 2010 logo will be used at meetings and official activities during the year, when Vietnam will assume the rotating presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and for ASEAN-related events to take place in Vietnam .

Deputy PM Khiem said at the launching ceremony that 2010 is of primary significance to Vietnam , being 15 years after the country became an official member of ASEAN.

2010 will also mark the beginning of a 5-year scheme to build an ASEAN community scheduled to take shape by 2015.

The grouping passed its first charter in 2008.

The ASEAN is comprised of 10 members, including Brunei , Cambodia , Indonesia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , the Philippines , Singapore and Thailand./.
