ASEAN foreign ministers have agreed to make all- out efforts to implement action plans to achieve the formation of the ASEAN Community at the end of this year, Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman told reporters following the closing of the ASEAN Foreign Minister Retreat in Malaysia on January 28.
He added that ASEAN leaders are due to adopt a blueprint on the post-2015 ASEAN Vision during the bloc’s 27 th Summit slated for this November.
Regarding ASEAN external relations, ministers reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation with dialogue partners. They agreed that more discussions are needed to seek ways to enhance the weight of the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN’s central role at forums.
Anifah Aman continued, saying the ministers underlined the importance of improved cooperation in the framework of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management.
The foreign ministers issued a statement condemning the violence and brutality committed by the self-claimed Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), especially the recent beheading of a Japanese national, and reiterated commitments against violence through the Global Movement of Moderates.
Malaysia will convene an ASEAN Special Ministerial Meeting on radicalism and extremism following the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on transnational crime in early October, the minister said.
Discussing the East Sea dispute, ministers re-affirmed the importance of maintaining peace, security and stability, enhancing mutual trust, and exercising restraint.
He said retreat participants shared the concern raised by some ministers on land reclamation and building artificial islands in the East Sea. The ministers instructed senior officials to make stronger efforts for the full and effective observance of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, and work harder towards the formulation of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
Malaysia also renewed its proposal to develop an ASEAN common time zone for consideration.-VNA
