The second ASEAN Militaries’ Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise (AHX-2) opened in Brunei’s Muara naval base on June 16 with the participation of the 10 ASEAN member countries, according to the Quan doi Nhan dan (People’s Army) newspaper.

The event, which is being jointly hosted by Brunei and Singapore, features a seminar where military leaders from ASEAN nations shared their experiences in the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) efforts undertaken by their forces.

The newspaper reported that representatives from the Vietnam People’s Army were among those to speak at the seminar and they emphasised the important role played by ASEAN in coordinating forces to deal with disasters. They added that Vietnam has put in place an adequate legal framework from which it can work with other ASEAN members in HADR work.

The AHX-2 also includes a table top exercise where around 100 participants took part in a drill planning a combined mission and a rescue operation in response to floods and storms.

Singapore and Indonesia co-hosted the first ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise in 2011, with different phases of the exercise conducted in both countries.-VNA
