Chairman of ASEAN 2010, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has said it is necessary to develop a close link between the legislative and executive branches to build an ASEAN community by 2015.
Addressing the first meeting between ASEAN leaders and delegates of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Hanoi on April 8, PM Dung affirmed that the legislative bodies of AIPA members play a more important role in making contributions to and facilitating the implementation of agreements for an ASEAN community.
According to Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, AIPA 2010 President, ASEAN countries currently face severe challenges including sustaining economic recovery and addressing social unrest, which cannot be resolved by any one country alone without multilateral cooperation.
Therefore, “as ASEAN is advancing towards its objectives in the Charter, the further coordination between legislative and executive branches has become more urgent and significant than never before,” he stressed.
In his opinion, the ASEAN-AIPA meeting serves as a pivotal forum for the two organisations to exchange views at the highest level on regional and global issues of common concern, continuing to work towards future coordination to successfully implement objectives set forth in the ASEAN Charter towards the ASEAN Community in 2015.
NA Chairman Trong further said that AIPA has approved Vietnam’s initiative to establish a further regular consultative mechanism with ASEAN.
Accordingly, the President of AIPA and the Chair of ASEAN will participate in each other’s official activities to exchange views on issues of mutual concern, and to coordinate actions for common objectives./.
