The 2014 ASEAN People’s Forum (APF) opened on March 21 in Yangon, Myanmar, under the theme “Advancing ASEAN People’s Solidarity towards Sustainable Peace, Development, Justice and Democratisation”.
The thee-day event draws the participation of about 3,000 civil society representatives from 10 member countries of the association and Timor Leste who will join 35 conferences on different topics, including peace, equality and human rights.
At the opening session, U Aung Min, Minister of the President’s Office of Myanmar – the current ASEAN Chair – delivered a message on behalf of Myanmar President U Thein Sein, expressing the belief that the collection of ideas from civil society is crucial for the development of each country.
Meanwhile, A.K.P Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General for Community and Cooperation Affairs, urged civil societies in ASEAN to continue working closely with the bloc by helping enhance public awareness of the ASEAN Community and promoting mutual understanding and solidarity among the people of the member countries.
