ASEAN and its member states are determined to cooperate with each other as well as with the international community and the United Nations to address the problems facing the globe and foster peace, security and development.

Ambassador Le Luong Minh, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, stated this at a meeting to step up cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organisations in maintaining international peace and security.

As Vietnam has recently taken over the chair of ASEAN, Ambassador Minh confirmed that the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) contributes greatly to promoting peace and security in the wider Asia-Pacific region.

The APSC seeks to enhance peace and security through effective conflict prevention, resolution mechanisms and peacekeeping activities, Minh added, “it is essential for ASEAN, its member states and the UN to have a coordinated approach.”

According to the Ambassador, ASEAN has been granted observer status in the UN General Assembly and the two organisations have already signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation which provides an important framework to further enhance ASEAN-UN relations as well as allowing ASEAN to make a greater contribution to the UN to promote peace, stability and development around the world.

ASEAN has worked actively to foster good relationships with other countries and groupings by developing partnerships, he added.

Speaking on behalf of Vietnam and the other ASEAN members, the Ambassador suggested that cooperation in maintaining international peace and security should make full use of previous experiences, in accordance with the UN’s Charter and the statutes of regional organisations.

He called on international organisations, including the UN’s agencies, to support regional initiatives, strengthen their abilities to realise these initiatives and encourage mutual learning and the exchange of information./.
