Health officials from the 10 member countries of ASEAN gathered in Bangkok in Thailand on June 30 to discuss measures to speed up regional cooperation in an effort to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
At the event, titled the “ASEAN Consultation on Regional Framework on Greater Involvement and Empowerment of People Living with HIV ”, those taking part exchanged their experiences and outlined their plans to introduce preventive solutions in their own countries.
The event was part of ASEAN’s efforts to carry out campaigns on related issues, propose future plans and reach important targets during the period 2011-2015.
According to Jintana Sriwongsa from the Health and Communicable Diseases Division of the ASEAN Secretariat, there are currently about 1.6 million people living with HIV in Southeast Asia, of which about 500,000 are in Thailand./.
