Vietnam 1 defeated Malaysia 3-2 in the opening match of the Yamaha ASEAN Under-13 Football Cup in Hanoi on October 4.

It took the host team about 20 minutes to score the opening goal made by striker Tran Danh Trung. Five minutes later it was 2-0 after Nguyen Huu Thang's straight shoot.

Malaysian levelled the result in the second half with goals by Aliff Haiqal Bin Lockman Hakim Lau from a penalty and Wan Ahamad Bin Wan Setapa who looped the ball over the head of Vietnamese keeper Vu Duc Minh.

When it went to the last seconds Bui Minh Duc scored a third goal for the Vietnamese team, represented by the Viettel football club.

With three points, Vietnam 1 topped Group A and will next play Indonesia 1 on October 5.

In the later match, Vietnam 2, represented by Song Lam Nghe An FC, lost 0-2 to big-and-tall Thailand in the Group B's first match.

Their second match will also take place on October 5.

The two best teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on October 6.-VNA
