ASEAN volunteers support locals in Thue Thien-Hue

The ASEAN Young Professionals Volunteer Corps organised a volunteer programme to support community in Hai Duong commune, Huong Tra town, central Thua Thien-Hue province from November 23-December 5.
The ASEAN Young Professionals Volunteer Corps organised a volunteerprogramme to support community in Hai Duong commune, Huong Tra town,central Thua Thien-Hue province from November 23-December 5.

Jointly held by Brunei’s Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports andthe Hearts for Hue foundation, the event contributed to furtherstrengthen the solidarity, friendship and cooperation between ASEANmember states.

Some 27 corps members have workedwith the local community to construct fences and yard for Hai DuongKindergarten in a bid to prevent children from road accidents.

According to the provincial Youth Union Secretary Nguyen Chi Quang,the coastal Hai Duong commune was selected by the programme due to itsvulnerability to natural disasters.

In 2013,storm No.11 hit the commune, causing 1.5-meter floods and tidal surgeswhich blew off 300-meter shore and threatened lives of local residents,he said.

The volunteers also conducted workshopsand training courses for villagers on environment protection and helpedclean local beaches.-VNA

Remains of Vietnamese fallen soldiers, experts repatriated from Laos

The remains of 12 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts, who laid down their lives in different periods in Laos’ Savannakhet province, were repatriated following a handover ceremony on May 21. They will be re-buried at the Road 9 National Martyrs Cemetery in Vietnam's central province of Quang Tri on May 22.

Nghe An reburies martyrs' remains repatriated from Laos

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phung Thanh Vinh said that carrying a noble international duty, many Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts heroically joined Lao people in their struggle for national liberation and independence. Many of them sacrificed their lives in the country, including more than 12,000 soldiers laying down in the three provinces of Xaysomboun, Vientiane, and Xiangkhouang.

19 localities eradicate substandard houses

Four more provinces have announced the completion of efforts to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated housing, bringing the total number of localities achieving this milestone to 19 out of 63 nationwide, according to the Ministry of Ethnic and Religious Affairs.
