ASEAN women’s meeting passes resolution

The 14th ASEAN Confederation of Women’s Organisations (ACWO) General Assembly passed a resolution to enhance women’s participation and contributions to the development of each country and the region on Oct. 20 after two days of sitting.
The 14th ASEAN Confederation of Women’s Organisations (ACWO) General Assembly passed a resolution to enhance women’s participation and contributions to the development of each country and the region on Oct. 20 after two days of sitting.

The resolution showed the determination of participants to boost the implementation of government commitments to women’s advancement and gender equality.

It also called upon national women organisations to make efforts for the development of information technology and digital communications, facilitate female-run businesses and ensure sustainable development matching ASEAN Charter’s objectives and principles relating to women.

ACWO expected the governments of ASEAN+3 to support the formation of a consultative mechanism to further strengthen regional cooperation and collaboration to increase women’s power, participation and contributions in all sectors.

The national councils of ACWO’s members agreed on six commitments, focusing on raising women’s economic power, climate change and environmental protection, anti-human trafficking, increasing ACWO’s role in boosting exchanges, sharing information and experiences among women of regional countries and developing connectivity and networks.

Indonesia will be the chair of ACWO in the 2010-2012 term./.
