Four young Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) citizens have been honoured as ASEAN scientists of tomorrow in a ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat.

The youths had all been selected from within the region to take part in the 59th Meeting of the Nobel Laureates, said a press release from ASEAN Secretariat. The four young scientists from Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines were the first group of students to represent ASEAN at such a prestigious gathering.

The 59th Nobel Laureates Meeting was held from 28 June to 30 July 2009 in Germany and drew almost 600 young scientists from across the globe, providing them the opportunity to interact with some of the world’s most brilliant minds, said Surin Pitsuwan, the Secretary-General of ASEAN in the press release.

“We plan to provide more opportunities for talented individuals from ASEAN to take part in such meetings in the future. The benefits that they will derive will be tremendous, both for their home countries and the region,” he added./.
