Leaders from ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have spoken highly of the effort to transform the East Asia Emergency Rice Reserve Pilot Project into a permanent mechanism under the ASEAN+3 Emergency Rice Reserve.

At meetings as part of the 15th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held on October 24-25 in Cha-am Hua Hin, Thailand, they acknowledged the development of the pilot project and instructed ministers of agriculture and forestry in 13 countries to make more efforts to early expedite the realisation of this permanent mechanism to ensure food security after the pilot project is null and void.

They also confirmed the progress made in the East Asia energy cooperation plan, especially a roadmap for building a petroleum depot system.

During the ASEAN-India Summit, the two sides agreed to boost two-way trade to 70 billion USD within the next two years.

Leaders of ASEAN member countries and India expressed their pleasure at the progress in the implementation of the Plan of Action to establish the ASEAN-India Partnership for peace, progress and shared prosperity.

The leaders praised the significance of the signing of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement in September, saying that the agreement will create more favourable conditions for producers and exporters.

They also called for the early ratification of the agreement. ASEAN and India are currently negotiating an agreement on air transportation, which is expected to be implemented by 2011./.
