The Asian-Pacific Parliamentarian Forum (APPF) has approved a special resolution on climate change, sponsored by six countries including Vietnam, at a meeting in Singapore which ended on January 21.

The annual four-day meeting, which attracted 134 members from the parliaments of 21 member countries, also passed 14 other resolutions on politics, security, economics, trade and regional cooperation, which highlighted solutions suitable to specific situations in each and every country.

Also high on the meeting’s agenda were the joint efforts to safeguard regional peace and security, overcome economic crises, cope with climate change as well as natural disasters and encourage dialogue amongst young people throughout the region.

Vietnam’s initiative to set up a common mechanism for cooperation in Asia and the Pacific region was included in the resolution on climate change, with strong backing from member countries.

The meeting’s joint communiqué made clear that the APPF-18 meeting was a great success, meeting its goal of strengthening regional cooperation through dialogue and a mutual understanding amongst regional countries.

The next annual meeting is scheduled to take place in Mongolia in January 2011.

The Vietnamese parliamentary delegation was led by National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, who called on all member countries to work closer together to solve global challenges./.
