Japan, China and the Republic of Korea held their first ministerial meeting in Kobe , Japan on October 31 to strengthen cooperation in disaster preparedness in relation to typhoons, earthquakes and other calamities.

The meeting was attended by Seiji Maehara , Japan 's State Minister in charge of disaster prevention, Luo Pingfei , China 's Vice Minister of Civil Affairs, and Park Yeon Soo, Chief of the RoK National Emergency Management Agency.

Topics under discussion included increasing exchange visits by officials in charge of disaster preparedness and sharing information on measures to improve the earthquake resistance of buildings and facilities.

Typhoons are said to be growing bigger in scale as a result of global warming and the three Northeast Asian countries are located in the region frequently rocked by earthquakes.

The three nations agreed to hold regular meetings of the kind after an earthquake measured at 8.0 degree on the Richter scale hit the western Chinese province of Sichuan on May 12 last year, leaving more than 88,000 people dead.
