Japan ’s Prime Minister Taro Aso and his Cabinet resigned en masse on September 16, ahead of the scheduled launch later in the day of a coalition government led by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ).

Aso, who also resigned as head of the Liberal Democratic Party, launched his Cabinet on September 24 last year, following the abrupt resignation of his predecessor Yasuo Fukuda.

According to the Kyodo News, DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama, who led his party to a sweeping victory in the August 30 House of Representatives election, is set to become prime minister as the DPJ and its coalition allies also control a majority in the House of Councillors.

The Japanese parliament is scheduled to meet later on the day to formally endorse the new government leader.

The coalition government of the DPJ, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the People's New Party (PNP) will be the first government to be led by a party other than the LDP in the past 16 years.

On his Cabinet lineup, the presumptive prime minister has tapped former DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada as foreign minister and Hirofumi Hirano, his top aide, as chief Cabinet secretary.

SDP chief Mizuho Fukushima is set to become minister in charge of consumer affairs, population, food safety and gender equality, while PNP leader Shizuka Kamei is to take up a new ministerial post overseeing postal and financial affairs.

DPJ Acting President Ichiro Ozawa was appoined the party's new secretary general on September 14 at Hatoyama’s proposal./.
