At least one person was killed and 25 others injured in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai in the evening of May 5, Thai media reported.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the magnitude of the quake was 6.0, but the Thai Meteorological Department and National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) later confirmed it was a 6.3-magnitude quake.

As of 7 a.m. of May 6 (local time), at least 109 aftershocks were detected with the magnitudes from below 3.0 to 5.2 on the Richter scale, according to the NDWC.

Tremor was also felt in nearby provinces of Chiang Mai, Phrae, Phayao and Lampang, as well as in the capital Bangkok.

Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has instructed relevant agencies to provide assistance to affected areas, where many buildings and roads were damaged in the quake.

Meanwhile, another 5-magnitude quake was reported in the morning of May 6, 9km southwest of Mea Suai, also in Chiang Rai province.-VNA
