Australian Ambassador Alaster Cox unveiled the aid at a forum on climate change in the Mekong Delta, held in Can Tho city on Nov. 12-13.
He said the project covers a large range of issues related to climate change solutions, including effective measures, management improvement and relevant policy making to integrate the issue into the socio-economic development strategies and programmes.
Other goals are to help administrations at all levels and scientific agencies to make accurate evaluations on the risks of climate change so as to work out appropriate measures to cope with the problem.
Its immediate targets include efforts to stabilise people’s living conditions in case the sea water levels are rising as well as to research, mass-produce and cultivate saline water-resistant tree species.
The project also calls for more programmes on water resources and ecological conservation, better management of risks caused by floods and draughts and working out measures on rescues, evacuating people to safer places, protecting locals and providing healthcare for victims of natural calamities./.
