The Australian Government has provided 3.8 million USD to help prevent blindness in Vietnam so far this year.

In March and April, through Fred Hollows Foundation, the Australian Government signed memorandums of standing on fundings for eye care projects in Hanoi , Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Ha Giang, Quang Binh, Thua Thien-Hue, Tien Giang and Ho Chi Minh City .

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Allaster Cox expressed his hope that those project would help improve eye care services in target localities, thus reducing avoidable blindness towards the goal set by “Vision 2020 – the Right to Sight”, a joint programme of the World Health Organisation and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness with an international membership of NGOs, processional associations, eye care institutions and corporations.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is inspired by work of the late Professor Fred Hollows, whose vision was for a world where no one is needlessly blind.

Treatment of cataract blindness has come a long way in Vietnam since Professor Fred Hollows first visited in 1992. Fred had been invited by the government to demonstrate modern surgery techniques with local doctors.

As part of the Vietnam Blindness Prevention Programm, the foundation currently works in the provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Nam , Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Vinh Long, Dak Lak, Quang Ngai, Thua Thien-Hue and Da Nang city./.
