Australia will provide up to 15 million AUD to Vietnam to help it tackle the impacts of climate change.
This was revealed at a ceremony announcing Australian-funded projects to implement the Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change Programme in Vietnam by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi on August 23.
The projects will be carried out by the Australian Government in cooperation with six international organisations from the country, including the Australian Red Cross, CARE Australia, the Environment Protection Fund, Oxfam Australia, Save the Children Australia and the SNV Swiss Development Organisation, and other Vietnamese and foreign organisations.
According to the Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Hugh Borrowman, the project is to support Vietnam in its efforts to minimize disaster risks, enhance food security and ensure water supply to about 500,000 most vulnerable people in the country.
Vietnam is now one of the most vulnerable countries affected by climate change, in particular to floods and rising sea levels, especially in t he Mekong Delta region.
The projects will also help improve skills of Vietnamese managers and farmers and contribute to building action plans to cope with climate change through local experience.
They are part of the Australia-funded financial assistance worth 599 million AUD for the 2010-2013 period to carry out projects on adapting to climate change worldwide.-VNA
