President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) Vu Xuan Hong on September 12 presented the “For Peace and Friendship Among Nations” insignia to Australian artist George Burchett.

The award aimed to honour his contributions to promoting Vietnam – Australia friendship and cooperation over past years.

Born in Hanoi, George Burchett has strong sentimental connections to the Vietnamese country and people due to impact of his father, Wilfred Burchett, one of the outstanding foreign journalists who actively supported the anti-US resistance war of the Vietnamese people.

On the occasion of the 100 th birthday of Wilfred Burchett, a photo exhibition on Vietnam, displaying 100 photos taken by the late journalist, will be open from September 14 to October 4. It will be organised by the Vietnam – Australia Friendship Organisation, Asia Vision Centre and Ho Chi Minh Museum.

One of most famous journalists of the 20th century, Wilfred Burchett always supported Vietnam and was a close friend of President Ho Chi Minh and Vietnamese Party and State leaders. He also lived with Vietnamese cadres and soldiers in Viet Bac and southern bases during the two resistance wars. Wilfred Burchett died in 1983 at the age of 72.

The same day, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for Popularisation and Education Nguyen The Ky received George Burchett and other relatives of the late Australian journalist, who have been in Vietnam to attend the exhibition.

Ky applauded the initiative to organise the exhibition, saying that this is a practical activity in tribute to Wilfred Burchett for his contributions and support to the Vietnamese people's struggle for national independence./.
