Local officials in many localities on May 5 visited and presented gifts to Buddhist dignitaries, monks and nuns on the occasion of the upcoming United Nations Day of Vesak and Buddha’s 2558th birthday.

Vice Standing Chairman of the People’s Committee of the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum Nguyen Huu Hai visited the provincial Buddhist Sangha Executive Committee and pagodas in Kon Tum city, Dak To and Dak Ha districts.

He spoke highly of contributions of the Buddhist dignitaries and followers to the province’s socio-economic development and the strengthening of the unity bloc.

In central Thua Thien-Hue, Venerable Thich Khe Chon, Standing Vice Chairman of the provincial Buddhist Sangha Executive Committee, thanked the local government for creating favourable conditions for Buddhists to practise their faith.

He affirmed that the dignitaries and followers will accompany local authorities and people in turning the province into a centrally-run city in the future.

On the occasion, a host of religious activities were held at the banks of the Huong River and other Buddhist centres, while charitable events were launched for the poor and disabled in the locality.-VNA
