Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) on February 27 awarded Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Vietnam Anar Lachin Oglu Imanov a Commemorative Medal for Peace and Friendship among Nations in recognition of his efforts to foster the two countries’ relations.

Speaking at the award ceremony in Hanoi, VUFO President Nguyen Phuong Nga recalled the long-standing ties between Vietnam and Azerbaijan, saying historic visits by President Ho Chi Minh to the Azerbaijanese capital city of Baku in 1959 and by President Heida Aliyev to Vietnam in 1983 have laid solid foundation for the bilateral friendship to grow.

Vietnamese people always remember support from the government and people of Azerbaijan for Vietnam in past struggle for independence and today’s national construction and protection, Nga said.

She hailed Imanov, the first ambassador of Azerbaijan in Vietnam, for his important contributions to strengthening and accelerating the friendship and cooperation between the two peoples since the Azerbaijanese Embassy was established in Hanoi in 2013.

He also enthusiastically supported the founding of the Vietnam – Azerbaijan Friendship Association in October 2015 with 100 members, she noted. Since then, the association has cooperated with the Azerbaijanese Embassy to organise various diplomatic and cultural events and delegation exchanges, especially the visit of President Ilham Aliyev to Vietnam in 2014.

She hoped that the ambassador will continue dedicating to the development of the bilateral relations in the future./.
