The 10th Conference of Catholics for National Construction and Defence took place in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on November 8.

The event, held by the provincial Catholic Solidarity Committee, saw the participation of authorities from local government and agencies as well as more than 90 delegates representing the 280,000 Catholics in the province.

During the conference, participants agreed on the major direction and missions of the committee for the term, which focus on raising the patriotism of local Catholics.

They also highlighted the need to make use of support from Catholic friends around the world in national construction and defence.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau diocese consists of 78 parishes with more than 51,000 Catholic households living in 66 out of 82 wards, communes and townships, accounting for 28 percent of the province’s total population.

Over recent years, local Catholics have played a significant role in the province’s economic development, while devoting billions of VND and thousands of working days to the construction of public transport works following the programme of building new-style rural areas.

Participants at the conference also named members of the Catholic Solidarity Committee for the new 2013-2018 tenure.-VNA
