The southern province of Bac Lieu brought home more than 265.5 million USD from the export of seafood, mostly frozen shrimp, in the first eight months of this year, up 45 percent against year-on- year.

Bac Lieu province is home to 33 export seafood processing factories with a total capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year. However, all facilities always run at just one third their capacity due to a shortage of raw materials. Local processing businesses fail to secure contracts with farmers and have to rely on traders for material supply.

Towards the target of 400 million USD worth of seafood export revenue in 2014, the provincial authorities have instructed relevant agencies to assist processing businesses in the form of ensuring power supply, credit access and market information.

A number of processors have also initiated cooperation with shrimp farmers in a bid to secure material supply.-VNA
