The Ministry of Public Security has successfully busted an international crime syndicate that was using information technology to hack into bank accounts.
The police arrested 99 people from mainland China and Taiwan during the last week who had participated in the crimes. The suspects had been living in districts 2, 7 and 8 in HCM City .
Police seized the suspects' computers, laptops, mobile phones, electricity generators and ATM card readers they had used. According to investigators, the suspects had previously performed similar operations in Taiwan, mainland China and Thailand before coming to Vietnam.
The group often divided into small units of eight to 10 people that would then focus their attacks on a particular banking or financial institution. They also had people working in Shanghai and select Chinese provinces.
The group also used telecom service providers such as SPT, FPT and Viettel to carry out the attacks.
A majority of the arrested are in a list of wanted criminals. Investigators said they believe that the group was using Vietnam as a base to attack companies in China and other regional countries.
Officials from Taiwan and mainland China have asked the Vietnamese authorities to hand over these criminals so that they conduct their own investigations./.
