European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Barroso won a second term of office after a majority of European Parliament (EP) members voted him during a session in Strasbourg , France , on September 16.
Barroso obtained the victory with 382 supporting votes among 718 EP members who took part in the ballot.

Earlier, leaders of the 27 EU member states had already backed him to secure the position for the new five-year term.

Barroso, 53, a former Portuguese prime minister, was elected as the EC President in 2004 and will finish his mandate in November this year. He was the only candidate in the European Parliament vote.

Speaking after his victory, Barroso announced that he is willing to cooperate with all EP political parties which agree with his policies.

In his action programme during the next tenure, he will give priority to preventing unemployment, coping with the global economic crisis, rescuing the financial market and maintaining the EU’s leadership in the fight against climate change and illegal immigration./.
