HCM City (VNA) – Nearly 100 delegates from 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) discussed best practices sharing of standards and conformity assessment implementation on smart cities in the APEC region at a workshop in Ho Chi Minh City on August 18.

The workshop is an activity of the APEC Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC) within the framework of the APEC 2017 third Senior Officials Meeting (SOM3) and related meetings.

In his opening remarks, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung said the promotion of digital economy has been considered an important issue of the APEC 2017.

One of SCSC 2017 priorities of this year is “Development and promotion of standards and conformance to support the digital economy” that the APEC region needs to work together to share best practices, identify opportunities and challenges, and boost cooperation, harmonisation of standards and conformity assessment that directly contribute to the achievement of the Bogor Goals, he said.

The workshop focused on development orientations for international standards (ISO, IEC) in smart cities.

The participating developing economies shared experience in making policies on developing smart cities as well as development orientations suitable with standards set by the UN.

The delegates also talked about the standardisation on the basis of scientific and technological advances in smart transport and buildings, water resources management, energy-efficient new-generation means of transport, information-technology infrastructure and smart applications in daily life.

The workshop offers a good opportunity for APEC member economies and relevant international organisations to seek ways to reform and promote the building and application of scientific and technological advances in standard and recognition activities, gearing towards sustainable development of smart cities in the APEC region. -VNA
