International cooperation at sea will increase mutual understanding between countries, support the sea-based economy and create a scientific basis for the confirmation of Vietnam ’s sovereignty over its seas.

Participants at a conference on international cooperation on conducting scientific research and surveys on the continental shelf and Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos shared the view in Hanoi on March 30.

The conference, hosted by the General Department of the Sea and Islands of Vietnam under the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, is part of a large-scale project on international cooperation at sea until 2020.

According to the department, international cooperation on the issue helped raise the capacity of Vietnamese scientists in maritime research, thus increasing the quality of studies of the country’s maritime resources.

For the sustainable development of the sea-based economy and national defence and security, Vietnam needs to boost international cooperation on scientific research of the sea./.
