The campaign to promote local people’s involvement in the management of borderlines, border markers and security along border areas has yielded good results in the 2003-2009 period.
Speaking at a conference on Mar. 19 to review the campaign, Sen. Lt. Gen. Phan Trung Kien, Deputy Defence Minister, stressed that the results demonstrated the effectiveness of the policy on building a citizen-based national defence and security.
So far, 44 provinces with border lines and islands have taken part in the campaign with the involvement of the people and organs of the military and the government at all levels. Their concerted efforts have helped protect national independence and sovereignty and maintain political stability in border areas. The policy has also helped boost solidarity among ethnic groups and between people and soldiers, and contributing to socio-economic development.
Sen. Lt. Gen. Kien called on sectors, localities and the border guard to continue the work of raising people’s awareness on the importance of national sovereignty and the integrity of national borders.
He also asked the border guard to play a key role in border protection and act as a counsellor for localities in residential planning in border areas to stabilise and develop the socio-economy.
On this occasion, over 200 units and individuals were honoured for outstanding contributions to border management in the 2003-2009 period./.
