The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) concluded a summit in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia on April 15 with calls for urgent reforms to the global financial system, including the voting powers at the World Bank.

The day-long summit, the second of its kind after the first in Russia in June 2009, brought together Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The leaders discussed a range of issues related to the world’s economic situation, the Group of 20, the reform of global financial organisations, climate change and dialogue and cooperation amongst BRIC countries. They also touched upon matters regarding Iran ’s nuclear programme.

As emerging economies, the BRIC countries account for over 40 percent of the world’s population and 16 percent of its gross domestic product. The nations have given global economic growth an added momentum./.
