The number of broadband subscribers in Vietnam is expected to grow in the next five years thanks to continued investment in infrastructure and introduction of advanced technology.

"We predict relatively robust broadband subscriber growth (in Vietnam ) over the next five years from continued investment in broadband infrastructure and the introduction of WiMAX in the years to come," said a report on Vietnam telecom market in the first quarter of 2010 launched by companiesandmarkets.com.

There were a total of 2.895 million broadband subscribers in November 2009, reflecting growth of 41.3 percent in the first 11 months of the year, the "Vietnam Telecommunications Report Q1 2010 - New Market Report" says

It also forecasts around 900,000 3G subscribers by the end of 2010, accounting for 0.6 percent of the total mobile subscriber base, adding that this percentage will rise to 2.2 percent by the end of our five-year forecast period in 2014.

According to the report, the number of 3G subscriptions will grow during 2010 following the commercial launch of services by Vinaphone in October 2009, followed by MobiFone in December of the same year.

Besides, the number of internet users in Vietnam rose by 7.9 percent in the first 11 months of 2009 to reach 22.479 million. The number of internet users rose by 12.3 percent in 2008 and 26.3 percent in 2007.

The internet market in Vietnam will grow, at a lower rate in 2010, up by 8.4 percent year-on-year, and the ability to sustain higher growth rates in future will depend on the pace of internet infrastructure development in rural parts of the country, the report says./.
