As many as 3,000 hectares of cajuput-producing forest in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau are in a drought, including 1,200 hectares under high risk of fire, according to Nguyen Van Hai, Head of the provincial Forest Management Department.
The dry season arrived early this year due to decreased rainfall in combination with a month of intense heat and strong wind.
The hazardous and fire-prone situation has put 500 forest rangers and locals on full alert. A number of drills have been carried out and relevant logistics have been prepared for any potential emergencies.
The local U Minh Ha cajuput forest covers 75,000 hectares, including a valuable 8,000-hectare primeval forest within the Vo Doi national forest.-VNA
