Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) has suggested the UN send observers or set up an office at the NEC’s headquarters to observe the country’s 6th National Assembly elections in late July.

The suggestion was made by NEC Chairman Sik Bunhok at a working session with the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Rhona Smith on March 13.

According to spokesperson of NEC Hang Puthea, Rhona Smith asked the NEC to ensure fairness, transparency and honesty in the upcoming elections.

However, she has not answered the NEC’s proposal.

Rhona Smith had a working visit to Cambodia from March 5-14, during which she had meetings and working sessions with senior Cambodian officials.-VNA
