Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Government of Cambodia will provide bonuses to female civil servants and armed force personnel when they deliver their babies, starting from January 2018.

Mothers giving birth to one child will receive 200 USD, while mothers of a twin will get 400 USD and mothers with a triplet will get 600 USD, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on October 9.

The country will spend about 2.1 million USD a year on the programme.

Cambodia has 92,198 female civil servants and armed forces personnel, with 10,844, or 11.7 percent, of them having babies each year.

Last month, the PM announced to offer bonuses to workers in the garment and footwear sectors when they have babies, beginning from January next year.

Mothers giving birth to one child will receive 100 USD, while mothers of a twin will receive 200 USD and triplet mothers will get 300 USD.

The government plans to spend about 10 million USD a year on pregnant labourers because there are about 900,000 female workers working in the sectors with a pregnancy rate of 2.7 percent, or 24,000 workers, each year, he said.

The bonuses will be paid through the National Social Security Fund.

This is a new policy on social welfare that is carried out by the Cambodian People's Party-led government, Hun Sen said.-VNA
