Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Cambodian Parliament Chiem Riep, who is also a senior official of the ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP), has called on leaders and parliamentarians of the opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), to participate in the country’s Parliament.
Talking to the press on March 20 in Phnom Penh, Chiem Riep said he invited CNRP President Sam Rainsy, Vice President Kem Sokha and all 55 parliamentarians of the party to attend a joint Parliament forum.
On March 16, Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh and several social organisations made an appeal to CNRP parliamentarians to take part in Parliament .
The CNRP has not participated in Parliament for nearly eight months since the July 2013 polls. The election results showed that the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against the 55 seats taken by the CNRP.
Claiming serious irregularities during the poll, the CNRP refused to accept the results and demanded the establishment of an independent committee to investigate the election outcome. It has boycotted Parliament and held many protests demanding for a re-election, all rejected by the CPP.-VNA
