Cambodia has completed phase I of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) information highway project which connects six GMS member countries.

The GMS information superhighway project phase l - started in December 2007 and completed in June 2009 - involved laying an optical fibre cable over a distance of 649.9 km and performing equipment upgrades for 11 stations as well as constructing 15 new stations along the route within Cambodia.

Phase I was conducted by Telecom Cambodia (TC) and China’s Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. Cambodia is scheduled to carry out phase II by constructing a high speed transmission system linking the six GMS countries, namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

In phase III, Cambodia will connect the country’s public services like e-government, e-education and e-healthcare.

The GMS information superhighway project was initiated by China when the country hosted a GMS meeting in July 2005 in Kunming. The project is estimated to cost 66 million USD./.
