Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodia expects to welcome some 5 million tourists by this end of this year, as the number of visitors to the country has seen a sharp increase by approximately 2 million people during the last four months, according to the Cambodian News Agency (AKP).

In the first eight months of 2016, nearly 3.2 million of tourists visited Cambodia, Minister of Tourism Thong Khon told local media early this week, adding that with direct flights between Cambodia and Japan, the number of Japanese tourists to Cambodia increased by around 2-3 percent.

Thanks to direct flights between Cambodia and China, Cambodia expects to receive from 850,000 to 900,000 Chinese visitors at the end of the year.

Cambodia is committed to welcome some 7 million foreign arrivals by 2020, the minister stressed.

Last year, about 4.5 million international tourists visited Cambodia, of whom around 800,000 are Chinese, making China the second biggest tourism market for Cambodia, after Vietnam, reported AKP.-VNA
