Cambodia has set up 89 district-level immigration management agencies across the country in a bid to step up inspections of illegal immigrants.

Head of the Cambodian Interior Ministry’s immigration department General Sok Phal said on July 21 that the decision of the Cambodian Government aims to facilitate local level immigration management rather than depending entirely on provincial-level agencies as in the past.

The agencies will be responsible for inspecting, classifying and managing unlawful immigrants and ensuring safety for foreigners in Cambodia.

The Cambodian Government has recently intensified inspection campaigns for migrant workers and unauthorised immigrants. In the first six months of this year, the country’s authorities detected and deported 1,200 illegal immigrants from various countries.-VNA
