Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on September 18 once again called on the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP)’s elected lawmakers to attend the first session of the fifth National Assembly slated for September 23.

In his letter to all the 55 CNRP parliamentarians, the King affirmed that he will preside over the opening session, and asked the recipients to join the meeting in order to demonstrate national unity and solidarity.

This is the latest effort by the King to do away with the risks of political unrest caused by the divergence between the CNRP and the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) following the general election on July 28.

On September 17, leaders of the CNRP declared an end to a three-day demonstration.

However, in an announcement following the second meeting with representatives of the CPP, they still called on supporters to prepare for another demonstration if their demands on issues related to elections are not met.-VNA
