Cambodia and Laos have signed a number of cooperation documents in various fields, including health, judiciary, culture, education and security.

They also inked a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of General Consulates between Cambodia and Laos, and an agreement on a sister city relationship between Phnom Penh and Vientiane .

The agreements were signed on the occasion of the two-day official visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to Laos from February 6-7.

On February 6, PM Hun Sen also held talks with his Lao counterpart Thongsing Thammavong.

Briefing each other on the socio-economic development in each country, the two PMs expressed their delight at the sound neighbourliness they share.

They spoke highly of the bilateral cooperation outcomes which have practically benefited both peoples. The two leaders also underscored the need to foster bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Applauding the results of the 12th meeting of their Cooperation Committee in Siem Riep in January, they said it is necessary to continue fostering coordination, especially in security, politics, economics, trade, transport, tourism and energy, as well as cooperation in the framework of the sub-region and the Laos-Cambodia-Thailand heritage triangle.

They affirmed that PM Hun Sen’s visit not only marks the friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Laos, but also helps bolster the solidarity and mutual understanding within the ASEAN member countries.

PM Thongsing Thammavong lauded the policies that his Cambodian counterpart has applied to lead the country, while praising the results of the recent election in Cambodia.

He said that the Lao Government has focused on socio-economic development, striving for a GDP growth of 8 percent or more by 2015 and bringing it out of the list of least developed countries by 2020.

The same day, the Cambodian PM also met Lao President Choummaly Sayasone and National Assembly Chairperson Pany Yathotou.-VNA
