Cambodia has installed body-temperature monitoring machines at several international airports and border gates after its neighbour Thailand announced its first MERS infection.

According to Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bunheng, the thermometers are being used at the Phnom Penh and Siem Riep airports and at border check-points in Poipet (Cambodia/Thailand border) and Bavet (Cambodia/Vietnam border).

There have yet to be any MERS cases recorded in Cambodia, but precautions are essential as numerous flights take place daily between Cambodia and Thailand and the Republic of Korea, he said.

The spread of the deadly virus poses a pressing concern as tourism is an economic pillar in Cambodia. Besides, poor local medical infrastructure is likely to fail to contain the epidemic should occur.

On June 18, a 75-year-old businessman coming to Bangkok from Oman for heart-disease treatment was identified as the first MERS patient in Thailand. The virus has thus far entered four Southeast Asian countries – the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, China and Thailand.-VNA
