Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen praised the country’s victory over the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime 36 years ago during a speech given on January 6.

During his address in T’bong Khmum province on January 6, PM Hun Sen proclaimed January 7, 1979 as an unforgettable historical event, as the day Cambodians rose up against the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime.

He stressed that without the courage shown that day, life as it is today would not be possible.

Earlier on January 3, a ceremony to mark the 36th anniversary of the victory was held in S’vay Rieng, with the participation of generals and officers of the Cambodian Royal Army, as well as over 1,000 teachers, students and local community members.

At the event, Minister of State for the Cambodian Defence Ministry Meang Samphon emphasised that Cambodia holds deep respect and gratitude for the heroes, soldiers, patriots, and Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who laid down their lives to save Cambodia from the genocidal regime and bring peace to the people.-VNA
