Cambodia has completed all preparations for the upcoming fifth parliamentary election scheduled for July 28 when 9.67 million voters in the country will go the polls for 123 seats at the National Assembly.

In replying to Vietnam News Agency's correspondents in Cambodia, Secretary General of Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) Tep Nytha said, with much experience in preparation for the previous elections, the committee has compiled voting regulations and rules, overall plans, and related documents meeting the expectations of voters and political parties.

This time’s election is expected to cost around 20 million USD paid by the Cambodian Royal Government.

Voters’ election registration started in late 2012 and has been completed so far.

Half of the 9.67 million voters are at the age of 18-35 and the electoral register was posted at more than 19,000 polling stations nationwide.

With 800 official candidates and 1,900 on probation, eight of 42 political parties in Cambodia have been competing for the 123 seats.

The NEC coordinated closely with Cambodia’s Ministries of Home Affairs and National Defence to ensure security and neutral atmosphere at the polling and counting stations.

Accordingly, around 5,000 security and order men are mobilized for the election.

The month-long election campaign in a smooth manner kicked off on June 27 and will conclude on July 26.

The participating parties have followed electoral laws, regulations and procedures while the process of election is being under control of the NEC, Nytha said.

The NEC aims to assure that the election will take place in a sound, equitable, and obvious manner and meet the expectations of local people and international community, added the Cambodian Secretary General.

When organizing the election, the Cambodian committee always observes the country’s current law on election and refers to international standards in the field.

Notably, around 40,000 national and 85 foreign observers will inspect this fifth parliamentary election in Cambodia.-VNA
