The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) resumed a trial of two former leaders of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime on January 21.

Nuon Chea, 88, and Khieu Samphan, 83, are facing charges of genocide, rape and forced marriages.

The trial was delayed on January 8 as Khieu Samphan was hospitalised due to his sudden hypertension.

In August 2014, the two defendants were given life sentences for crimes against humanity after their first two-year trial from November 2011 to October 2013. However, they appealed against the guilty verdicts.

The United Nations-backed ECCC was established in 2006 with the intent to seek and deliver justice for victims of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, which claimed the lives of 1.7 million innocent Cambodians during the 1975-1979 period.

In 2010, the tribunal sentenced ex-chief of Tuol Sleng prison Kaing Guek Eav, or Duch, to life in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity.-VNA
