The National Election Committee (NEC) of Cambodia on May 12 announced a report on the initial progress of an all-level council election campaign.

During the first week of the campaign from May 2-10, Cambodia’s participating parties held canvasses at their headquarters and public places and staged parades in the capital city Phnom Penh and some provinces, in accordance with rules prescribed by the NEC, their report said.

No cases of violence were reported during the week. The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) carried out its campaign in Phnom Penh and eight other localities while the United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful and Cooperative Cambodia ( FuncinpeC) met with representatives of commune councils at their private houses.

The campaign will end on May 16.

Five political parties of Cambodia are running for the local election, slated for May 18, and as many as 11,459 voters will go to the polls.

To date, 485 observers from Cambodia’s parties and 107 from abroad have registered to oversee the election.-VNA
